Tuesday's Tune!

Time to resurrect the song of the week again, this was something I did a year or so back but got out of the habit. However, Dave suggested that it makes a return, so here is a song which was out in 2007, See You at the Lights by the 1990's. It may have been played a fair bit, but it certainly is one of the best tunes of 2007!

SOTW 2: This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)

For the past couple of weeks, Stop Making Sense has been my go-to DVD for when I'm sitting around doing nothing in particular. When I was wee, I'd always read about how great it was but I didn't get round to watching it until I was studying. Now that I own it, every so often I'll take the notion to stick it on, and that'll be me off on a Talking Heads trip for a few weeks.

Picking a song of the week from the film is pretty tricky, since they're all fantastic. I've picked This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody), firstly because it's amazing and I really like to play it at the start of the night on a Sunday in Nicky-Tams, but also because the performance from the film is lovely. If you've never seen it, you're in for a treat. David Byrne dancing with the lamp is a bit of magic.

I couldn't really leave it at that, so as a bonus Stop Making Sense slice, here's Life During Wartime too. In the film, this is the first taste of Byrne's amazing dancing, and where the gears start shifting towards running-on-the-spot, sweaty, big-suit madness:

I guess what I'm saying is that you should go get hold of Stop Making Sense if you haven't seen it, and go watch it if you already own it. My other top tips for new folk are Psycho Killer, Slippery People and Burning Down The House. As good as they are on YouTube, you do lose the cumulative power of seeing the whole concert.

No Quiz - Sunday 19th October

This is a wee announcement to say that there will be no quiz on Sunday 19th October due to the Carnage night in Stirling.

It's the first time in as long as I can remember that the quiz isn't on and we're gonna take advantage of our night off. Perhaps for a change we'll try our hand at being contestants at another quiz in town. Enjoy Carnage if you go along. Apologies to our regulars if it's any inconvenience. Drink responsibly, friend.

The quiz will of course return to normal in a fortnight on Sunday 26th October. Hopefully see you then.

SOTW 1: Diddy Wah Diddy by Captain Beefheart

Ok, my debut "Song of The Week" choice for the blog is "Diddy Wah Diddy" by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band.

I stumbled upon this rewatching a BBC documentary John Peel made about the Captain. It's up on Google Video HERE, and is well worth a watch. Compared to his more famous Trout Mask Replica style stuff, Diddy Wah Diddy is a fairly normal affair. It's still a noisy old 60s garage rock stomp though and it's just great. Beefheart growls and yowls away.

The YouTube video I've posted is a very rough version, it's got weird stuff all over it and is out of sync. I've chosen it because it's the only full version of the original 'video' I can find. For a higher quality version of the tune, go HERE.

Song of The Week

Hello! For well over a year now I've been keeping a playlist in my iTunes called "Song of The Week". Every week I pick a track that I have particularly enjoyed listening to over the last 7 days and drop it in there. After a while, the playlist has grown into a big weird collection of tunes that wouldn't exist together anywhere else. It's kinda worked out my favourites for me.

The song can be new or old, one I've just discovered or an old favourite. The genre, mood or popularity are also irrelevant. The fun is that I end up with a mix of styles. Sad songs from sad times and happy songs from happy times. Sometimes I think about my choices quite intensely, sometimes it's a spur of the moment thing.

I'll try to post a selection from my list here (1 a week, hopefully). If you could take a wee minute to listen to the songs, I think you might like them. I hope you do. Also, I recommend everyone to start a Song of The Week playlist. After a few months it'll become a real go-to choice on your iPod.
